With the opening of new coal
mines the population of Coxhoe grew fast and in 1891 the residents of Coxhoe
numbered 3133.
Coxhoe was constituted a separate parish in 1865 and was created from the
greater part of the township of Coxhoe together with small parts of Quarrington
and Cornforth Town. Coxhoe has
Cornforth on the western side and part of Quarrington Hill.
Coxhoe parish was formed out
of the two ancient parishes of Kelloe and Biship Middleham.
Coxhoe Township comprises 1055
acres and in 1801 only 117 people lived in Coxhoe.

The Wesleyan Chapel is an
imposing brick building in the Italian style and was built in 1871 at a cost of
about £800.
Also in 1871 Coxhoe’s National
School was opened with room for 218 pupils in the mixed classes and 72 in the
Intant's class.
